Gi BJJ Classes

Gi BJJ Gent

At Stark Gent BJJ we love training in the gi. There’s nothing we’d rather do than fold someone’s gi with the person still inside it, or choke them with their own lapel. If we get to wear pyjamas, we’re happy.

Get Started

Why you should train in the Gi

You might be thinking to yourself. "You know what, I haven't seen anyone walk around in the city in a gi in the last 200 years; why should I train in the gi?

It's just a lot of fun. If someone wears a suit jacket or a hoodie, it’s basically the same game as gi grips — we even did a community event where people rolled in suits.

The fun thing about training in the gi is that your grips are pretty stable, so you can build up a system of attacks by moving from one grip to the next.

Putting on your gi feels like putting on your war armor. Nothing cooler than choking someone out with their own jacket.

(That being said, we love no-gi too, our classes are divided 50/50)

How we teach Gi at Stark (Ecological approach)

We coach using the ecological approach (constraints-led coaching).

In practice, that means our classes are built around games with a resisting partner as opposed to blindly repeating a move. After all, if your partner isn't resisting, it's impossible to know if you do it right.

  • Every class includes around 2 games for each major area: standing, pinning, and guarded.
  • We run 3-week lesson blocks, each with a clear theme.
  • We rotate through 7 repeating themes, so the full lesson plan cycles every 7 × 3 weeks.

Finding our BJJ gym in Gent

Company: Stark Ghent VZW

Address: Nijverheidskaai 3c, 9040 Gent (in de zaal van Boxing Woest).

Finding the entrance

You can just click the map above to find the easiest route to the gym. But sometimes people have a hard time finding the entrance because it's a bit hidden. That's why we're adding some extra instructions.

If you go to the location on the map below, you'll find a bike store named "Grand Départ" to get to the gym, you need to walk through the parking and walk in through the red gate on the right. There you'll see a tent, the door is under the tent on the right.

Parking instructions

Sadly, we're not allowed to park in the parking lot of the bike store or next to the gym. That's why you will need to park on the street.
